How to use and care for a wheelchair

Whenever a patient is in a wheelchair or moving in or out of a wheelchair, he or she must master basic operations such as operating brakes (brakes), removing armrests and footrests, and lifting hips forward in a wheelchair. Pick up and move your hands to the footrest to fasten the toe brace. Patients and their families must learn to push wheelchairs on flat ground, push wheelchairs on slopes, and get up and down steps.

1. Self use

(1) Push wheelchair on flat ground

When the wheelchair is pushed on the flat ground, the buttocks shall be seated stably, the body shall be balanced, the head shall be raised, and the wheelchair shall be moved forward. Arms back, elbow slightly bent, hand grip wheel ring back, arms forward, extend elbow. At this time, the body leans forward slightly and repeats for many times. The forward momentum generated by the upper body increases the strength of the arm.

(2)  Wheelchair back on flat ground

Between the wheel handles, the two arms are placed around the back of the chair to extend their elbows and put their hands on the manual ring, lean back and lower their shoulders, so that the arms can push the wheel backward with enough strength. For those who can't push the wheelchair up the slope, this method can also be used to make the wheelchair back up the slope, and the hemiplegic patients' limbs and the health measurement coordinate movement to push the wheelchair forward.

(3)  Push the wheelchair on the slope

Uphill: lean forward, put your hands on the top of the hand ring respectively, extend the wrist joint back, bend the shoulder joint and retract it to push the wheel forward. By changing the direction of the wheel to make it intersect with the slope, the wheelchair can also stand on the slope.

Downhill: extend the head and shoulders, and apply the hand brake. You can put your hands in front of the wheel or hold the top of your metacarpal under the hand loop while maintaining the wrist extension.

(4)  Change wheelchair direction

Take turning to the left as an example: the left hand is placed behind the manual circle, the left arm rotates slightly outwards, so as to transfer the body weight to the inside of the wheel through the left hand, turn the right wheel backward with the left hand, and turn the right wheel forward in the normal position with the right hand.
